Distribution: Nova Scotia to Georgia, west to Minnesota and Missouri.
Synonyms: RHS and G&C use *Actaea alba for Actaea pachypoda.

Size: 1-2 ft.
Form: Herbaceous perennial and wildflower
Bark:
Stem/Bud: Flowering stems are thick and red.
Leaves: Leaves are 2-3 pinnately compound, alternate, 4 in. long with sharply serrated and cut leaflets.
Fall Color:
Flower: Flowers are white, 1/4 in. wide and densely clustered on thick, oblong, terminal racemes. Flowers have 4-5 sepals falling early and 4-10 flat, small, slender, clawed petals; flowering May to June.
Fruit: Fruit are clustered oval, glossy white berries with dark red or purple spots. Berries are poisonous.
Uses: Found in cool shaded, rich woods and thickets. Use in woodland and wildflower gardens.
Problems: Plants, especially berries and roots are poisonous.
Culture: Grow in part-shade in moist, well-drained soil. Grow in a sheltered area.
