Distribution:  Quebec to Wisconsin, south to N. Georgia. Cultivated since 1755.

Synonyms:  

Hardiness Zone:  USDA Zones 3-7       (view USDA zone map)

Size:   15-20 ft. tall (up to 30-35 ft. tall) with a similar spread.

Form:   Deciduous tree. Large shrub or small tree, upright, open, irregular, forming a flat-topped to rounded crown.

Bark:   Young branches are green with prominent, long, vertical white stripes.

Stem/Bud:   Buds are valuate, red, stalked, the terminal being l/2 inch long.

Leaves:   Leaves are opposite, simple, 5-7 inches long, 3-lobed at apex, finely serrate, bright green in color.

Fall Color:   Fall color is yellow.

Flower:   Flowers are yellow, borne on a pendulous raceme, 4-6 inches long, in May.

Fruit:   Fruit is a samara, wings to 3/4 inch long, spreading widely off the raceme, hanging in pendulous terminal clusters up to 6 in. long, ripening in Sept.

Uses:   Specimen in shade, woodland borders, naturalizing.

Problems:      Subject to winter sunscald when planted in the open.

Culture:   Plant in sheltered, shady area where soil is moist. Propagated by seeds.
