Distribution:  Korea, China, Japan. Introduced to England in 1820.

Synonyms:  

Hardiness Zone:  USDA Zones 5 or 6 to 8       (view USDA zone map)

Size:   15-25 ft. tall, with a similar or greater spread.

Form:   Deciduous tree. Upright to weeping, mound-like in outline, dense, often multi-stemmed.

Bark:   Bark is medium gray in color, with chalky-white stripes.

Leaves:   Leaves are opposite, simple, 2-5 inches long, deeply 5-7-9 lobed, doubly serrate, varying from yellow-green to deep maroon-red, depending upon cultivar.

Fall Color:   Fall color is bronze or purplish.

Flower:   Flowers are purple, small, borne in a small, stalked corymb, in May-June, not important.

Fruit:   Fruit is a samara, l/2 inch long, not important.

Uses:   Specimen, patio tree, accent in border.

Notes:    III divides cv. into groups: (1) cv. with green leaves; (2) cv. with red or reddish leaves; (3) cv. with yellow or golden leaves; and (4) cv. with variegated leaves. RHS use groups for cv.: (1) Palmatum Group with 5 to 7 palmately lobed leaves(incl. Septemlobum Group); (2) Elegans Group with leaves mostly 7 lobed and divided to the base of near it; (3) Dissectum Group with leaves 5 to 9 lobed, incised nearly to the base, lobes pinnatisect or deeply serrate; (4) Linearilobum Group with leaves divided almost to the base into 5 to 7 narrow lobes which are denticulate but not incised; (5) Variegated Cultivars.
