Distribution:  Southeastern Europe. Hardy in the north.

Synonyms:  Acanthus hungaricus is sometimes used for Acanthus balcanicus.

Size:   2-4 ft.

Form:   Herbaceous perennial.

Bark:   

Stem/Bud:    Stems are erect, tall, sturdy and form a dense clump.

Leaves:    Deeply-divided, thistle-like leaves are lance-shaped with broadly ovate, serrated lobes. Leaves are soft, glossy green, long, narrow, deeply divided and narrow at the base.

Fall Color:   

Flower:    Flowers are small and white with spiny, purple bracts on tall, sturdy spikes; flowering June to July.

Fruit:    Fruit are two-celled capsules with two seeds in each cell.

Uses:    Use in a perennial garden the back of the border for its ornamental, bold foliage, as a specimen plant and as a cut flower.

Problems:       Snails and slugs can become a problem.

Culture:    Grow in full sun or part-shade in well-drained soil. Mulch in the winter for protection.
