Distribution: Europe, western Asia( N. Turkey, Caucasus, N. Iran). Introduced by early settlers in colonial times.

Size: 25-49 ft. tall, with a spread of 30-40 ft.
Form: Deciduous tree.
Upright, with a broad rounded head, dense, often branched to the ground.
Bark:
Stem/Bud: Stems and branches are somewhat corky.
Leaves: Leaves are opposite, simple, 2-4 inches across, with 3-5 rounded, entire lobes, dark green in color, containing a milky sap in the petiole.
Fall Color: Fall color is yellow-green to yellow.
Flower: Flowers are greenish, in an upright corymb in May, not showy.
Fruit: Fruit is a samara, with horizontally spreading wings 1 inch or more across, l/2 inch wide.
Uses: Specimen, patio tree, tall hedge, informal hedge, screen. Drought tolerant. Salt tolerant.
Problems:
Culture: Grows best in clay loam soils. Species propagated by seeds, cultivars by budding.
