Distribution: New Brunswick, south to Virginia and Texas.

Size: 60-89 ft. tall, with a spread of 30-60 ft.
Form: Deciduous tree. Upright, irregularly pyramidal when young, forming a somewhat rounded crown with maturity.
Bark:
Stem/Bud: Buds are large, reddish-brown, somewhat flattened, tear-drop shaped.
Leaves: Leaves are alternate, simple, broad ovate, 4-8 inches long, with a cordate or truncate base, coarsely serrate margin.
Fall Color: Fall color is yellow to brown, not especially showy.
Flower: Flowers are pale yellow, l/2 inch long, fragrant, borne in a drooping, 6-l5 flowered cyme in mid to late June, subtended by a large bract.
Fruit: Fruit is grayish, nutlike, l/3 - l/2 inch long, tomentose.
Uses: Naturalizing. Salt tolerant.
Problems: Sucker shoots can be a problem.
