Unit 8 (008)

1. Intro.

Unit 8 includes a number or tropical plant families, which have a few temperate plants

that are in the landscape.

2. Persimmons

The common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is native in the eastern United States,

and has edible fruit that are the size of a large cherry. The unripe fruit can really pucker

up your mouth if you eat them. The bark looks like it is made of chunks or charcoal.

The plum size persimmon in grocery stores is the Japanese persimmon (Diospyros

kaki).

3. Trumpet Vine dermatitis or rash

Campsis radicans can cause a rash on some people. I saw it on one student several

years ago, but that is the only time I ever saw someone react.
