Abbreviations Used in the SaylorPlants Encyclopedia:

       * = Required for lecture exams. Also used in front of required Synonyms from RHS etc.

Full reference citations are listed below the abbreviations.

III, RHS, FNA, G&C, and Voss (Michigan Flora) are most commonly used.

III and RHS are used for Scientific or Latin names since they cover most herbaceous and woody

plants in cultivation. They include house plants, greenhouse and conservatory plants, fruits,

vegetables, and field crops. Tropical crops are also included. Catalogs and other references

may vary in the names used, and some authors do not list their references, so you do not know

where there names came from. Consistency is important in communicating about plants

to others around the world. Common names are not as reliable, since one plant can have

many common names, and a common name here can refer to a different plant in England.
